Welcome to the Freespirit Foundation website!

A very warm welcome to those interested in making life better and happier, to the ones who aspire to make their dreams come true and inspire others to act…

Freespirit – the free spirit. So much hidden in these words…

While creating our logo we were inspired by prehistoric pictograms discovered in African caves. They have survived for thousands of years…inseparably attached to Africa, its hot sun and warm hearts of its people. These people are free like birds, or maybe like ibises - the symbols of wisdom and life worshipped for centuries. The magic of life… The Freespirit.

This is what we start our journey with...

Dream holiday in Radzyń Podlaski, 21st – 28th July 2014

A small town in Eastern Poland with the most beautiful rococo palace is the scene of another project which the freespirit Group took part in. We are in the building of a high school where a poster informing about African Week hangs in the school hall and is a talking point. The boys are allowed to use the sports equipment at the school, very exciting!

The children are sleeping in the gym, a ping – pong table appears nearly instantly, the children get their designated showers, each their own and they are delighted!

I love Polish school’ says Emmanuel

The governor highlights the importance of the visit of young Africans and their participation in the project. We have a long list of holiday activities, we spend some amazing moments in Radzyn.

At the market square in Zamosc the locals and visitors can savour the varied cultures of the world. The children from Ghana dressed in their hand made costumes delight the audience. Dance is in their blood, they are as good as adult groups, they show all their emotions through drumming and they mesmerise the audience. In Ghana dance is an essential part of life, every dance has a meaning, it is used to tell stories and pass values on, praise god, government. Dance is present at every event in all regions of Ghana.

The Freespirit Art Group – Time To Take On New Talents!

Children that have been with us for a few years have become really great performers, which was proved last summer in Europe at the festivals. The base of the Group are kids aged 11-14, but we also have 8-10 year olds who are progressing very fast.

Recently we have seen many younger children come to the trainings. They watch their older friends with great awe and with sparkling eyes, and later they copy the dance movements enthusiastically. We have decided to take on new members for the Freespirit Art Group – these newcomers aged now 6-8 will be the core of the Group in a few years’ time. This time however we aim at going one step further – we want to take on ca. 20 kids and get them to one school, or even one class, so that we can take care of their overall education in the best possible way. We have already received a green light from a relevant Department of Education to set up Class 1, which means setting up our own regular primary school at the same time .

Ghana at the forefront of Eurofolk 2014 performances in Zamosc

The Festival was inaugurated by a celebratory meeting with the organisers and town officials and a beautiful concert by the Group ‘Zamojszczyzna’. On the second day a colourful singing parade made up of dancers from Belarus, Chile, Macedonia, Mexico and Taiwan marched along the streets of Zamosc. The groups taking part in the festival presented a very high standard, showed off their countries’ culture and made new friends.

Off to camp after a funeral party!

So many Ghanaians are unaware of their birth date. They have doubts about the day, the month, or even the year! It is then not surprising that here nobody cares about birthday celebrations. However the main life celebration is held for the people who have passed away. Awesome funeral parties last two or three days and lots of family members as well as friends of the late person get together and celebrate. They bring various gifts for the family of the dead one – it is usually money, but you could also get a goat, a bottle of alcohol, or several boxes of matches. The dominant colours for the mourning attire are black and red.

A Nature Class in Kakum National Park – Jan 26, 2014

On Sunday Jan 26th we took 11 children to the Kakum National Park situated ca. 40 kms from Moree. Our guide Christopher was patiently explaining to the children the mysteries of the rainforest and its fauna and flora. We saw a kyenkyen tree – a bark cloth tree, which was used by the Ghanaian ancestors to produce clothing, an esa tree, which is used for the production of the logs and mortars to beat fufu, and the plant which used to be used to dye the cloth red and black (traditional Ghanaian funeral colours).

Ghanaian Kids Steal the Show during Debut Performance in Wrocław

In the most inconspicuous area of the most inconspicuous neighbourhood in Wroclaw, a group of young African dancers and drummers lit up the stage while making their debut performance for the 2014 Brave Kids festival.  Nestled between rows of towering apartment buildings in the old Psie Pole district stood a hurriedly built stage, which purpose was to showcase an international group of children as they put on their first performance in front of a sizable audience of Brave organizers, host families and friends, and wide-eyed locals who looked on from both ground-level and lofty apartment windows.

Adorable, humble, and talented--the show featured kids from Russia, Serbia, Indonesia, and Romania who delivered an array of dance, acrobatics, singing, and circus performances .  However, the most memorable performance came from the Freespirit Foundation's group of 7 kids from Moree, Ghana.  Their electrifying dance and drumming performance left both the audience and their peers in awe.  In this performance, every step and every beat was delivered to perfection, and would then set the standard for both kids and organizers for this year's Brave festival.  "My kids really came through for me", recalled the Ghana group's coach, John Mensah, who himself is a professional African dancer and choreographer.  "Even though I was very scared after our final dance rehearsal, I was relieved that the kids remembered every dance step for the performance."
