Children of Moree

This is what a child’s life is like here.  However, all jobs in Africa are performed at a leisurly pace; therefore despite all the jobs the kids do have a lot of time to do what they like and be bored. A lot of boys from families living close to the sea spend a lot of time on the beach, catching mussels and other shell fish. There are also families who give a lot of consideration to their children’s future and do not allow the boys to play carelessly and guard the young girls to protect them from unwanted pregnancies. Only very few families can send their children to a school in Cape Coast where the standards are much higher and the teachers are actually qualified, the reason being high fees and additional costs of transport. Child means money in this world.

Majority of children wear cheap imported Western clothes which can be purchased in the multiple second hand shops in Cape Coast. It is very rare to see a girl in a traditional dress or a boy wearing African batik. The reason, again, is the cost – the traditional outfits are much more expensive than clothes imported from Europe. It’s not just the expensive fabric but also the cost of sewing the outfits. This leads to the local seamstresses and producers  going out of business. Their small incomes are made up of sewing outfits for going to church, funerals and school uniforms.

Beautiful hairstyles are another tradition not present in such a poor place as Moree. For the reasons of hygiene most schools require shaved heads or hair no longer than 2mm. Long hair requires effort and money.  The fine braids are done at hair salons, where teenage girls and women can also get their hair straightened.

Everyday activities and taking care of one’s looks take up a lot of time. Surprisingly, despite the tough living conditions, Moree children and youth still manage to look nice. However the standard of living in this town (described by the locals as a ‘fish without a head’) is radically different to ours.
